About Our Group

The North East London Ramblers Group is part of the Ramblers Association and has a membership of about four hundred from all ages and walks (pardon the pun) of life. The group aims to offer a Walk on each Saturday of the year except over Christmas.

Insurance

Insurance Guidelines can be found here
The main purpose of the Insurance the Ramblers' hold is to cover claims by a third party against the Walks Leader or walkers
If you wish to cover yourself against injury, loss of earnings etc. Then you should probably arrange insurance for yourself as you would for a holiday

About our Walks

Our walks normally vary from eight to thirteen miles. Bear in mind that an eight mile hilly walk over muddy fields can be as difficult as a thirteen mile walk over flat firm footpaths. Weather conditions also affect the difficulty and general feel of the walk. Most walks stop at a local village pub where you may buy food and drink. If you prefer to bring your own refreshment, the Walk's Leader will suggest a place for you to eat and rendezvous with the others. Details of the walks and other events we provide are sent to all members of the group twice a year and can be viewed on line here.

How do you get to a Walk?

Most walks start and finish at a Network Rail Station (some more local walks can start from a Tube Station). The walk's details will tell you what London station to go to and the time of the train to catch. You should spot the other walkers at the station. Alternatively you may choose to get on at a station en route.
If you are planning on doing more than six or seven walks a year and you're under 60, it is probably worth getting a yearly Network Railcard. This will give you a 33% reduction on the day return fare during the weekend.
If you're "Trying us out"  do ask one of us if you can borrow such a Rail Card if you don't have one.
Alternatively, many train companies do a "Four go for the price of two" deal, the only caveat is you must travel together on the outbound and return journeys
In the case of a linear walk make sure you get a return ticket to the furthest station. Alternatively if the walk returns on a different line just buy a single ticket and purchase the return ticket at the station at the end of the walk or on the train home
If you are in any doubt do phone the Walk's Leader or Leaders on the number shown in the Events Program.

Remember that some of the train times specified in the Walks Programme may be out of date. Always check the times with National Rail a couple of days before a Walk and 'phone the Walk's Leader to confirm any changes.

Those of you who wish to travel on London Public Transport to the station and don't qualify for free travel may wish to buy an Oyster Card
You can Register and Buy your Oyster Cards here

What do you wear to a Walk?

The general answer to this is "be prepared". We all know the weather can change suddenly!
Most people wear stout walking boots, particularly in the winter when it is often muddy. Trainers are not recommended unless you know for sure that the walk has firm, flat footpaths and will not be muddy. Do make sure your boots are comfortable and you have some walking socks to go with them. At the lunch venue, be prepared to remove muddy footwear or cover them with plastic bags/pedal bin liners/shower caps.
Gaiters prevent water seeping into boots keep mud off legs/socks/trousers. If it is really wet, waterproof over trousers will keep your legs dry. Bring a waterproof jacket - these can be very light and fit easily in a small rucksack. If the weather is cold wrap up well with a fleece/anorak, hat and gloves to keep you warm.

The following are just some of the retailers who specialise in outdoor clothing. Field and Trek, Blacks, Trekmate Millets and Gear Zone
YHA Adventure
For those of you who live or shop in Camden The Outdoor Emporium provide a personal and friendly service
You may get a discount from some stores with your Rambler Membership Card - Always ask!

What do you bring?

Ensure you bring something to drink so you don't become dehydrated. There's usually a mid morning break so you might like to put some fruit or a snack in your bag for that. The Walk's Leader will have a map, compass and first aid kit, however you could bring your own compass and a whistle to blow if you were to become lost, waylaid or disorientated. Remember to bring any medication you might be taking and if you suffer from blisters or corns, some ointment and plasters for your feet

The only criteria is the Walk should be accessible by Public Transport. Leaders may be able to claim expenses associated with the preparation of the Walk.

How many people come on our walks?

Fortunately, only a small proportion of our membership of 400 or thereabouts attend any one walk !

Most Saturdays we average about 12 to 25.
